BALANCE
oil paintings / 2021 - 2022
THE series of paintings “Balance” represent a collection of stones and pieces of wood in compositions that suggest an imminent collapse.
The perception that the observer has of a stable or unstable equilibrium between its components is given to him as much by the assembly of objects as by the knowledge of their properties.
………………………
The landscape of Val d'Hérens, in French-speaking Switzerland, was the source of inspiration for the “Balance” paintings
Over the centuries, glaciers have carved into the mountains creating magnificent sculptures.
The narrow passes challenge travellers crossing the Alps.
On top of the mountains, the small houses face the wind and the snow and sway on the edge of the precipices.
Small stone disks bear imposing raccards.
The centuries-old attics resist the weight of the roofs, teasing their heavy stone roofing.
Pieces of wood stacked on top of each other create improvised shelters.
The aligned wooden planks are the memory of the fences that once divided the fields.
the rotten wood will give way under the weight of the stone, the huge stones will fall on the small wooden construction, the blade of wood balancing on top of the pyramid of stones will be blown away by the wind, ...
Not all forces at work can be represented and the painting is completed in the observer’s imagination.
“Balance” paintings portray the properties of stone and wood.
They evoke weight, density, hardness, state of decomposition, creating the perception of balance between its components.
paintings find harmony and beauty in the balance of colors and composition.
